- More than two million Canadians have diabetes and by the end of the decade this number is expected to rise to three million.
- In 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that over 177 million people have diabetes. By 2025, this figure will top 300 million.
- Diabetes is a contributing factor in the deaths of approximately 41,500 Canadians each year.

Because of the high instance of diabetes in the north the Diabetes Centre is in place to educate both the public and the employees about issues surrounding the disease. The Diabetes Centre sees both inpatients and outpatients, teaching about Type 1, Type 2 and gestational diabetes.

After the initial assessment patients will be followed monthly until Blood Sugars are stable and then every 3 to 6 months depending on the needs of the patient. In addition, twice a year the Diabetes Centre organizes a Diabetic Outreach Clinic in Iron Bridge.
